Exodus 9:8 - 12  When disaster, discipline, calamity, or judgment strikes, what follows is a long night of unanswered questions and pain. One big question that needs to be answered is, did we foolishly challenge God, either His written or natural laws?

One night near my home a train was stopped blocking a level crossing. About 1:00 a.m. a drunk man in a small car approached the crossing.  He blew his horn but the train did not move. Finally in disgust the man backed up a fair distance then put his car in low and pressed the accelerator to the floor.

The car lurched forward slamming into the stationary train. It was a long night for the man's family. Eight hours after the crash the man died. Whenever you mount a challenge, be sure you understand what it is you are challenging. Playing games with God hurts those we love and may result in the longest night of our life.

Arrogant pride diminishes our options for successful living by locking us into a downward spiral of waste and destruction that can result in death.

Many of us grew up with mixed messages about the attitude of pride. I remember getting a new pair of shoes with a mirror shine on them. I was so proud of those shoes that I couldn't take my eyes off them and I walked into a hydro pole. My sister said, "It serves you right, you shouldn't be so proud."
